After a close victory over Luton, Maguire saves particular praise for his “technically brilliant” Man Utd teammate.
Harry maguire has lauded Victor Lindelof, his Manchester United teammate, as “technically brilliant” after the Swede netted the game-winning goal on Saturday against Luton Town.
With the Red Devils’ much-needed victory over the Hatters, Erik ten Hag is under less pressure to produce better outcomes and performances.
Their 4-3 Champions League loss to Copenhagen on Wednesday marked their ninth loss in just 17 games in all competitions this season; but, their triumph over Luton catapulted them up to sixth place in the Premier League standings.
Lindelof, a Swedish international, scored a goal from the edge of the six-yard box to give Ten Hag’s team the victory and credit Man Utd for the win.
And following the game, Maguire, who has taken a lot of flak in the past few seasons, had nothing but admiration for his center-back partner.
“Victor [Lindelof] is technically brilliant,” stated Maguire. His skill as a football player has been evident over the years. He did pretty well today, so I’m very happy for him.
“We won today thanks to a set play that went into its second phase. Set plays are a major aspect of the game. We haven’t been strong enough at attacking set plays during my time at this club, but we have improved this year.
Man Utd haven’t “been playing at the highest level” this season, according to Lindelof, and the team’s current goal is to start scoring more goals.
The next step for us, according to Lindelof, is to score more goals, he said to MUTV. At this moment, the outcome and the three points are the most crucial factors.
“However, we need to keep moving forward, working hard, and developing in order to hopefully score goals, end the game, and avoid making things difficult for ourselves after that. But it happens gradually.
“We are aware that we haven’t been performing at our best. All we need to do is keep up the good work.
“We’re (not far) off the top four, which shows that we can still achieve a result even when we’re not performing at our best.”
“It’s always special and nice to score a goal – I don’t score that many anymore,” Lindelof continued in reference to his own goal. It’s a unique feeling to score the game-winning goal in front of the Stretford End, and I experienced it today.
“I told myself to just try and hit it quite hard and quite high” as soon as I saw the ball drop. I thought that was a good goal. We faltered a little after the goal, but as I mentioned, getting three points was crucial.
