Andre Onana’makes AFCON decision’ as Manchester United deals goalie blow.

At Man United, Erik ten Hag might not have his first-choice goalkeeper available while Andre Onana weighs his options.

According to rumors, Andre Onana intends to forego his talks with Manchester United executives in favor of representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Starting on January 13, the competition may cause Erik ten Hag to lose his first-choice goalkeeper for a month. The 27-year-old, who cost £47.2 million to sign from Inter Milan in the summer, had a rough start at Old Trafford but has since bounced back, recording back-to-back Premier League clean sheets against Fulham and Luton Town.

Unexpectedly, Onana left the national football team last year following a conflict with coach Rigobert Song. He later changed his mind, though, and is now serving for Cameroon in their doubleheader against Libya and Mauritius.

According to a Mirror article, United executives spoke with the goalie on his AFCON plans, but they feel helpless to stop him from competing. Onana, who has made 36 appearances for his nation since making his debut in 2016, might miss up to four Premier League games in addition to the FA Cup if he chooses to do so.

The last time Cameroon hosted the competition, they placed third and won the AFCON in 2017. They are thought to be among the favorites to win their sixth title, which would put them one place behind the record-holding Egyptians.

Since joining the team, the backup goalkeepers for United have only participated in two matches combined. Tom Heaton made two appearances in the Carabao Cup of the previous year, but Altay Bayindir—a £5 million summer addition from Fenerbahce—has not yet worn United uniforms.
