Chicago Cubs sign 1 of these 4 remaining free agents

The Chicago Cubs’ 2024 campaign appears to be dependent on their decision to re-sign slugger Cody Bellinger, who won the NL Comeback Player of the Year award while playing for the organization before becoming a free agent at the end of the previous one.

However, ESPN MLB analyst Jeff Passan recently questioned Bellinger’s return to the Cubs, arguing that the organization was more likely to sign one of the other significant players still available.

“I do believe the Cubs will sign one of the four Boras guys,” Passan stated to ESPN Chicago. Bellinger, Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, and Matt Chapman are the four players under Scott Boras’ representation. “However, I believe they don’t want to wait seven or eight years with Bellinger. They do not wish to spend more than $200 million.

The Toronto Blue Jays, according to Passan, are more “desperate” to match Bellinger’s $200 million asking price. However, it seems unlikely that Bellinger would agree to a shorter-term contract, in which case the Cubs may still be a good fit.

The Effect of Signing Matt Chapman on the Chicago Cubs

Chapman has long been seen as the Cubs’ “fallback” option in the event that they choose not to bring Bellinger back.

Chapman could be a poor substitute for one of the best left-handed batters in Major League Baseball in the batter’s box. After seven professional seasons, his numbers have declined, and his 2023 slash line was unremarkable.240/.330/.424.

However, Chapman is a defensive wizard who, while manning third base, has won four Gold Gloves. Bellinger’s opening-day positions at first base and center field may be filled by top-ranked prospects Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch if they have that skill set.
