Manchester United
During the international break, Ten Hag will be concerned about four Man Utd players.
Man Utd continues to struggle even after Luton’s victory,Erik ten Hag is under less pressure after Manchester United emerged from their crisis phase with four wins from five games.
As a result, the two-week international break may have come at the worst possible time. It will not only sabotage the momentum they have established, but it also puts overworked athletes at serious risk of injury. The last thing the Dutchman wants is for more players to sustain injuries while they are away representing their countries, since he has already lost Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund to injuries. Express Sport focuses on four stars in particular that Ten Hag and his team may be keeping a close eye on over the course of the next two weeks.
Marcus Rashford
Gareth Southgate is aware that Rashford is the guy in the top division who most needs a goal right now. That could assist to explain why he chose to keep him in the team despite the possibility that his performances called for it, as he seeks to restore his damaged self-esteem.
With 30 goals in all competitions last season, Rashford tore apart defenses; but, an unsettling decline in his performance this season—just one goal in 16 appearances—has coincided with off-field problems. The winger has had difficulty scoring goals and has also squandered several excellent opportunities.
The two-week international break will provide him some much-needed time away from the United firing line. With Malta the next team England will face at Wembley, this is a fantastic chance for Rashford to rebuild his confidence in front of goal. Ten Hag will be pleading with Southgate to select him above players such as Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka.
Bruno Fernandes
Ten Hag’s employment may have been saved—or at least lessened—by his injury-time goal against Fulham. And the Portuguese do appear to be able to summon a magical moment when things get tight.
This season, Fernandes and McTominay are tied for the most goals scored, demonstrating how poorly United’s forwards have performed in the Premier League. Similarly, he scored five goals in the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, earning him a pivotal role for Portugal.
With eight wins out of eight, the Selecao has already secured their spot in the tournament finals. Ten Hag would benefit greatly if Roberto Martinez chose to rest the United captain for at least one of their games against Iceland and Liechtenstein in order to maintain his health.
Harry Maguire
It is odd, for sure, that the player who was benched for the majority of the Premier League season after losing the captaincy is now the one to rely on. However, Maguire’s professionalism is demonstrated by the fact that he stuck with the work and didn’t give up even though everyone else was afraid about his future.
Although the 30-year-old is not perfect, he isn’t making many mistakes at the back right now. Ten Hag’s description of Maguire’s comeback to the team as “tactical”—which, when translated, simply means that Maguire is playing and Varane isn’t—says volumes about the player.
In light of this, and the fact that United has already lost Jonny Evans, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Tyrell Malacia due to injury, it would be disastrous if their £80 million player returned from his England service hurt.
Scott McTominay
McTominay’s rapid double against Brentford may go down as one of the most impactful changes in recent memory, and by reversing the score at Old Trafford, he demonstrated his ability to contribute to the Dutchman’s team this season.
This season, McTominay has scored a number of significant goals for United, demonstrating his worth as a reserve player and possible starter. Due to his injuries, Casemiro won’t be able to play until after Christmas, so he needs to stay healthy.
With six goals in Euro 2024 qualification, the 26-year-old has been a good goal scorer for his nation. There is little doubt that he will start for Scotland in their next two qualifiers, which include vital home matches against Georgia and Norway as they compete with Spain for first place. Ten Hag is probably praying for a safe return while he watches, maybe a little anxiously.
