Manchester United

Erik ten Hag needs to decide quickly on a harsh Manchester United transfer.

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, wants to strengthen one aspect of his team, but making difficult choices will be necessary to make it happen.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe poised and ready to finish his 25% acquisition of the Reds, Manchester United is about to usher in a new era.

Among his top priorities will be strengthening United’s playing roster, something Erik ten Hag is undoubtedly eager to do. The Dutchman has tried, albeit with varying degrees of success, to completely revamp the team throughout his time in Manchester.

But one area he hasn’t finished yet and is trying to become better at is defense, especially at center back. A number of center backs, most notably Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, have been connected to United over the summer and as we approach winter.

However, Ten Hag would have to make a tough choice if he were to be added to the United team. Currently, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Lisandro Martinez will stay with the team after this season.

Although Victor Lindelof’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, he is optimistic that his option to extend it for an additional year will be exercised. Jonny Evans’ contract expires in 2024 as well, although if he decides to stay in Manchester, he may move into the backroom setup.

If nothing is done, it is highly likely that United will have four center backs on its roster when the new season begins. Ten Hag is now faced with a challenging decision.

Given United’s track record of exercising one-year clauses, it seems likely that Lindelof will be no different. Ten Hag’s simple choice would be to let the Swede go at the end of the season and find a replacement in the summer, even though there is precedent for this choice.

But as of late, we have seen that Ten Hag is content to play Lindelof with all three of his center-back teammates, so he must consider him to be a valuable member of the club. Given that Martinez was the Dutchman’s first signing at United, his position is also secure.

That means that Maguire and Varane are the only two who can leave. The latter is currently the player out of favor at Old Trafford, and United may be able to pick up some big bucks if Al Nassr signs him.

Considering that Ten Hag wanted to trade Maguire in the most recent window, Maguire’s retention would represent a stunning turnaround for the former captain. But in the end, United needs to let go of one of their center backs as soon as possible to make room in the roster for the much-needed upgrade the team is in desperate need of.
