Gary Neville gives his view on Andre Onana as Man Utd consider David de Gea U-turn

The situation surrounding Andre Onana at Manchester United still leaves club legend Gary Neville uncertain, particularly with recent reports suggesting that his former club is contemplating a surprising move to bring David de Gea back to Old Trafford.

Gary Neville has openly acknowledged his hesitancy regarding Andre Onana, despite the Manchester United goalkeeper’s standout performance in the midweek Champions League clash.

The 27-year-old Onana joined the Red Devils during the summer in a £47.2 million deal, following the departure of long-time No.1 David de Gea. Nonetheless, Onana has experienced a challenging start to his career at Old Trafford, marked by several costly errors.

On Tuesday night, the Cameroonian international managed to redeem himself with a last-minute penalty save against Copenhagen in the Champions League, contributing to United’s crucial 1-0 victory. However, it appears that this single act hasn’t entirely convinced everyone.

During a social media Q&A session, when Neville was asked about his thoughts on Onana, he responded with a shrugging emoji and the word “for now,” indicating that the jury is still deliberating on United’s new No.1.

Neville, like many others, believed that his former club needed to move on from David de Gea, who had his fair share of errors in the previous season. United appeared to have done just that. However, a remarkable comeback for the Spanish goalkeeper now seems to be a possibility.

According to a recent report from The Sun, United has approached De Gea regarding a potential short-term return to provide goalkeeping cover. Onana is scheduled to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations in the upcoming year, which would leave United without their current No.1.

In anticipation of Onana’s potential absence, it’s estimated that he could miss up to eight matches if he’s selected for the Cameroon squad. United was caught off guard when Onana decided to return to international football after withdrawing from the national team during last year’s World Cup.

Manchester United currently has two other goalkeepers, summer signing Altay Bayindir and veteran Tom Heaton. However, Bayindir has yet to make an appearance for the club, and Heaton’s regular presence is far from guaranteed. In this context, De Gea, who is currently a free agent and back in Manchester, could find an opportunity to bid farewell to the club’s supporters in person after departing during the previous off-season.

De Gea had an impressive 12-year tenure at the club, amassing 535 appearances since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2011. If United does decide to bring him back, it would represent a surprising reversal of their previous decision, as the club ultimately chose not to extend a new contract to the veteran goalkeeper after months of uncertainty.
