Manchester United

Given the likelihood of Kalvin Phillips leaving Man City, he has delivered a clear transfer message to Manchester United.

Weekend reports indicated that Manchester United would try to recruit the Manchester City player in January, but Erik ten Hag will have his work cut out for him if that is the case.

According to sources, Manchester United may have their sights set on Kalvin Phillips in January, but convincing him to move to Old Trafford may prove to be unachievable.

Erik ten Hag is eager to bring additional vitality to midfield, and according to reports in The Sun on Saturday night, Phillips has been placed at the top of United’s winter shopping list. A ‘huge fan’ of the England star, who has been hailed as an ideal match for the deep-lying post, the Dutchman is reportedly.

Phillips appears certain to go from City in January, either permanently or on loan, following another season of few playing opportunities. All but confirming his departure, Pep Guardiola acknowledged earlier this week that he ‘couldn’t see’ the 28-year-old in his squad.

Ten Hag was rumored to have been watching the aggressive midfielder during Phillips’ first transfer window last summer, and United’s interest in him is not new. A lifelong supporter of Leeds United and an alumnus, he had just contributed to the West Yorkshire team’s promotion to the Premier League, but he had outperformed them in an amazing season for both the club and the nation.

Having grown up in a family of Leeds supporters, Phillips was familiar with the intense anger experienced by players such as Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand, and Alan Smith at Elland Road. Up there, his fans still adore him, and he maintained there was no possibility of destroying the bridge.

Are you heading to United? No, I never had any intention of going there,” Phillips declared in the summer of last year. You’re aware of my devotion to Leeds. My entire family is a Leeds supporter as well. Being a part of United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, was an honor for me.

“But no, I had to decide to move to the opposite side of Manchester and remain faithful to Leeds. That’s simply who I am, how I think, and how I will always be. To those who have given me the greatest opportunity in my life, I want to show loyalty. I made sure that signing with Leeds would be my top priority since they were the first team to sign me.”

Given how little playing time he has had under Guardiola, Phillips’ idea may be put to the test, but there will be plenty of other suitors for the midfield player in January. He continues to play brilliantly for England, and he has long-standing fans in Europe and at teams like Newcastle United.

But Ten Hag has a good track record of getting the players he wants, and he will be hoping that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival and investment will help him along. Getting Phillips to Old Trafford will be extremely difficult, but the effort might be well worth it.
