Manchester United

I’ve done everything I can to make him happy here, but Erik Ten Hag at last decided to let go of the multi million star in January

Raphael Varane, a center back for Manchester United, is apparently a target for Marseille in the upcoming January transfer window.

In the summer of 2021, the 30-year-old made the high-profile move from Real Madrid to Old Trafford, coinciding with the arrival of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo for the Red Devils.

Since then, Varane has made 75 appearances for Man United in all competitions, scoring twice, and assisting Erik ten Hag’s team in winning the EFL Cup in the 2022–2023 season.

Before quitting international football in March 2023, the defender was a mainstay for his country. He was a member of the France squad that won the World Cup in 2018.

Marseille has reportedly shortlisted Manchester United player Varane among potential January additions, according to French news source Foot01.

With Les Olympiens now in ninth place, OM is working to move back up into the top three spots in the Ligue 1 standings under the direction of Italian coach Gennaro Gattuso.

According to the source, Varane is the top target for Marseille if they want to sign a top-tier central defender during the January transfer window.

Additionally, it is believed that Gattuso’s team has identified 24-year-old Napoli defender Leo Ostigard as a possible addition. Ostigard has been making an impression in Naples this season.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion player appeared in seven league games as Napoli won their first Scudetto of the twenty-first century, contributing a brief part to the team’s Serie A victory under Luciano Spalletti.

Varane, the former Real Madrid defender, has made eight appearances for Man United in the Premier League this season. In August, he scored his lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Frenchman is thought to wish to remain at Old Trafford past the end of the January window, despite Marseille’s genuine interest.

Since Varane’s Manchester United contract expires at the end of the 2024–25 season, the Red Devils are not in a rush to trade the center back for a transfer price.

Ten Hag selected Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw as United’s defensive duo instead of Varane for Saturday night’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

However, the defender is apparently committed to winning back the Dutch head coach’s favor and returning to the starting lineup at Old Trafford.

Varane might start for Manchester United against Chelsea on Wednesday night before they play relegation-threatened Bournemouth on Saturday, assuming Ten Hag decides to switch up his starting lineup.
