Kobbie Mainoo, a young player for Manchester United, will soon find out his status with Erik ten Hag.
Kobbie Mainoo, a young player for Man United, excelled during the preseason before getting hurt in a friendly match against Real Madrid.
It seemed important when Kobbie Mainoo made his Manchester United debut against Real Madrid in Houston during the summer.
In the friendlies before that match, Erik ten Hag had given minutes to inexperienced and peripheral players, but he chose his best team to play Los Blancos, and Mainoo was included in the starting lineup.
Mainoo, who started in midfield with Casemiro and Mason Mount against Luka Modric, Jude Bellingham, and Aurelien Tchouameni, was the finest player on the field against Arsenal in New York.
The younger player’s opportunity to test his mettle against some of the top players in the world at his position was sadly cut short when he suffered an ankle injury a few minutes into the match.
After undergoing three months of recovery, Mainoo played for the Under-19s again, this time against FC Copenhagen at Leigh Sports Village, a far cry from the 80,000-seat arenas back home in the States.
Mainoo was substituted at halftime, marking his first public appearance on a field in ninety days, according to club sources. This was a prearranged move meant to properly manage his recuperation from injury.
Manoo was named on the bench for the Manchester derby a few days later, and Ten Hag commented, “He’s ready for a portion of the game, but there’s still work to be done.” That’s fantastic news since he plays midfield and we can make advantage of his skills, bravery, and physicality when he takes the ball. With all of his talents and abilities, he can benefit the team.”
The following day, United faced Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, and while many anticipated that Mainoo would start, he had actually played for the Under-21s the day before.
At the final whistle, Mainoo buried his head in his shirt as the young team lost 4-3 to Salford at the Peninsula Stadium, but his performance indicated that fans wouldn’t be seeing much more of his face soon.
Mainoo was great, and as the game went on, he became more powerful. He recorded two assists and caused problems for Salford with his explosive passing range, marking another step towards his return to full fitness.
Although it seemed sense to give Mainoo a chance in the Carabao Cup, it was unexpected to see him with the U21s. However, a member of the coaching staff informed this journalist that his injury recovery was being managed cautiously.
In the same post-match conversation, the staff member acknowledged that Mainoo had performed admirably against Salford. The young player was then called up to the first team to play Fulham, however he was not utilized as a substitute.
Mainoo was scheduled to play for the U19s in the UEFA Youth League, which is why he wasn’t observed at Carrington during training earlier this week before the Champions League match against Copenhagen, according to reports.
The phrase “eased back into action” was used, and it seems that the team took additional care with Mainoo to avoid pushing him back from his ankle injury too fast, which could exacerbate the issue.
Although that is a reasonable strategy, Mainoo should have been playing with the first team by now considering there is just one game left before the November international break starts.
Mainoo is prepared for his first senior appearance of the season; he has been training for more than a month and has played two whole games. Luton Town at home is the ideal opponent for him to make his run out.
Luton, who are expected to be demoted, will be at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. For that game, Ten Hag is expected to start Mainoo from the bench, at the very least, since he is expected to be in the matchday squad.
Speaking with those close to the player, it seems like Mainoo not only has the skill but also the necessary mindset to be successful. He should be given first team opportunities at United.
He’s had to exercise patience, which has put his mentality to the test, but he shouldn’t have to wait much longer.
This Saturday, Mainoo should play some role in the match against Luton.
