Mason Mount isn’t starting for Manchester United, in Paul Scholes’ opinion, for two reasons.
Mason Mount left Chelsea to join Man United in the summer, but the player hasn’t exactly had a great start to his career in Manchester.
Mason Mount, in Paul Scholes’ opinion, isn’t starting for Manchester United because he throws off the team’s equilibrium and leaves the midfield too exposed with Bruno Fernandes playing next to him. Mount, who cost £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons, was Erik ten Hag’s first summer transfer window acquisition. He came from Chelsea.
The 24-year-old was signed to Old Trafford to play in a deeper midfield role and was considered as Christian Eriksen’s natural successor. He built his name as a creative midfielder during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Despite starting the first two league games of the season, Mount’s midfield appeared unbalanced, and in the team’s loss to Tottenham, he suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out of action for about five weeks.
Since then, Mount has had difficulty maintaining a regular starting spot. In an interview with the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel, Scholes discussed the player’s challenging first few months at United.
“I believe he would play in the same venue as Bruno Fernandes. Scholes stated, “I believe the manager signed him as an attacking midfield player.”
However, it throws off the team’s equilibrium and jeopardizes his midfield legs. Although I believe he intended to play him with Fernandes, their current dynamic on the team doesn’t seem to be working.
Mason hasn’t played in enough games, therefore it’s hard to argue that he should be playing. Trying to argue that he should, then, isn’t clear because of this. You can make a slightly more informed judgment if he has a run of five, six, seven, or eight games.
“The major challenge is achieving the proper team balance. Mason Mount would fit into Ten Hag’s plan to play as many attackers as possible on the football field, which would entail one holding player and the other attacking players.
“However, it truly leaves the middle exposed by taking away their legs. In order to properly balance the team when someone like Mason Mount joins, you practically need two holding midfielders alongside him.
Due to an injury sustained against Luton, Eriksen may play more minutes for Mount in the upcoming weeks.
