Real Madrid showing interest in ex-Manchester United goalkeeper
Real Madrid has reportedly approached ex-Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea about joining the club following the latest injury to Thibaut Courtois.
De Gea left United in July after 12 years in the club after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract. Andre Onana, who came from Inter for £48 million ($62 million), has taken over in goal for the Spain international, who made 545 appearances and kept 190 clean sheets with the Red Devils.
Real Madrid have reportedly made touch with the 32-year-old after first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will have surgery in the coming days, according to Sky Sports.
According to the source, the Spanish giants are also monitoring Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is thought to be the subject of an offer from Bayern Munich.
With the injury to the Belgium international, Madrid is left with Andriy Lunin, 24, as Carlo Ancelotti’s only available goalkeeper just two days before the start of the 2023-24 La Liga season. He has only made 17 appearances for the Spanish team, and his lack of experience may have prompted them to hunt for a replacement goalkeeper in the trade market.
PLUS: Courtois, 31, has been a notable performer for Madrid since joining Chelsea in 2018. He has played 230 times for them since then, and Ancelotti’s club will miss him.
It is unclear whether they will recruit a goalkeeper before the transfer market closes on September 1.
On Saturday, August 12, Madrid will kick off their season against Athletic Club. De Gea has been seeking a new club for almost a month but has failed to sign with any of the clubs who have approached him.
