Manchester United
The summer transfer choice made by Manchester United is set to be tested.
While on international duty, Man United goalie Andre Onana sustained an injury.
It was only a matter of time until Manchester United’s goalkeeper suffered an injury, considering every other position on the club has been affected by them this season.
Given the amount of injuries his team has sustained this season, Erik ten Hag could be forgiven for believing his United club is under the malevolent influence of a hex. In addition to having four players out for the whole season, United has frequently been without its entire first-choice back four. It also seems as though someone is always being added to the list of injured players.
Even while Ten Hag still has to take the fall for the team’s abrupt downfall, the impact of all these injuries cannot be understated. Such pressure would test any squad in the world.
The one thing he most certainly did not want to hear has now happened. While serving for his country, Andre Onana sustained an injury. The Cameroonian will not play against Libya on Tuesday after being substituted late in Friday’s 3-0 victory against Mauritius.
“The Cameroonian Football Federation informs public opinion that the player Andre Onana, injured during the match against Mauritius on November 17, 2023 in Douala, is not part of the delegation of the Indomitable Lions currently in Benghazi,” the Cameroonian Football Federation said in a translated statement.
“Medical imaging performed by national selection physicians demonstrated a public affection. FECAFOOT hopes that you recuperate quickly in Cameroon.”
Ten Hag must be having a hard time sleeping at night because it’s unclear how serious the injury is or if Onana will be able to play against Everton on Saturday. It’s hardly the best preparation when things aren’t going well already and you have a run of important games coming up.
It is assumed that fellow summer recruit Altay Bayindir would finally get the opportunity to make his club debut if Onana is unable to play. Bayindir is yet to make his debut for the team because Ten Hag has accompanied Onana in cup matches thus far this season so the group can become used to his style of play.
Should he be called upon at Goodison Park, it would be a crucial examination of both his skills and United’s strategy about the goalkeeper role. After signing Bayindir, United let Dean Henderson, a goalkeeper with Premier League experience, leave the team. Henderson wanted to leave, and United was able to get a respectable price for him, but Bayindir still needs to demonstrate that he can compete with the current Crystal Palace goalkeeper in order to justify his choice.
Similarly, Tom Heaton is still a very good goalkeeper at the club despite being 37 years old. One who could quickly step in to take Onana’s place. Heaton, unlike Henderson, has the ability to push Bayindir for a spot, therefore if he doesn’t perform well when given the opportunity, he may lose it.
Already having a challenging season, United will get even more difficult opposition this coming Saturday.
