Why Darwin Nunez of Liverpool wasn’t sent off yet Diogo Dalot of Manchester United was

Man United’s Diogo Dalot was sent off against Liverpool FC for displaying disobedience towards referee Michael Oliver; nevertheless, Darwin Nunez, the opposition striker, was not punished in the same way.

On Sunday afternoon at Anfield against Liverpool, Michael Oliver was left with “no choice” but to show Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot the red card.

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, made this claim when discussing the choice on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch program. Dalot was booked twice in the closing moments of the match for yelling at Oliver during a goalless stalemate.

Darwin Nunez, a striker for Liverpool, did not receive the same punishment after receiving a yellow card for a challenge on Jonny Evans during the first half. He seemed to mockingly praise Oliver for his prudence, yet he was spared.

“You tell me two minutes ago that you want a yellow card for [Mohamed] Salah and three for Nunez, but on the one hand, you say you don’t want two yellow cards for Dalot. There is nowhere for me to go.

“Whichever way I jump, you will say I’m wrong.”

“The referee has no choice in the current climate,” Gallagher continued. Although I understand that United supporters will demand that Nunez be sent off, the referee declined to do so that particular instance.

With selection issues, United made the quick drive to Anfield. Due to illness, injury, and suspension, Erik ten Hag was without 11 players for the match; however, the Reds fought hard to earn a point at a location where they were defeated 7-0 the previous season and are still in the running for European spots.

The Portugal international Dalot will be suspended for their next top-fight match, which takes place on Saturday afternoon at 12.30 p.m. at London Stadium against West Ham. Before the New Year, United plays Nottingham Forest (A) and Aston Villa (H).
