Why Victor Lindelof of Manchester United shared captaincy in the most recent Sweden match

Victor Lindelof of Manchester United and Albin Ekdal shared the Sweden armband during the match against Estonia.

Victor Lindelof, a standout Manchester United defender, and Albin Ekdal, who was participating in his final Sweden international match, were sharing the captaincy duties, according to official Manchester United news.

Since August 2021, the Red Devils’ player has also had the honor of leading the Scandinavians as captain, following Andreas Granqvist’s retirement. Lindelof and Ekdal have played together for the majority of Ekdal’s Swedish career, and they shared the field once more as the Spezia midfielder capably finished with a 2-0 victory against Estonia.

However, this would be a different night as “the Iceman” opted to delegate his responsibility of leading out his side for the evening to his associate. After seventy-two minutes of play, Ekdal left the field to a standing ovation at the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof gave his friend, who was participating in his final game for his country, the captain’s armband.

Even though Sweden’s campaign hasn’t gone smoothly, they had a fantastic evening. Victory over Estonia 2-0 thanks to goals from Emil Forsberg and Viktor Claesson saw the Swedes wrap off their group stage campaign.

Sadly, though, Lindelof and his teammates will not be competing in the summer Euros this year because they finished third in their group with 10 points from 8 games. A new chapter in the history of the team has also been marked by the retirement of head coach Janne Andersson. The Scandinavian country has not advanced to the European Championship finals since 1996, and this is the first time that has happened.

Victor Lindelof is a center back for Manchester United.

After playing for the national team, Lindelof and United have a challenging away match against Sean Dyche’s Everton waiting for them. Lindelof is a versatile player with an almost perfect work ethic, so Manchester United might wish to hold onto him.
